Hispanic Heritage Month

IT’S HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, MI GENTE

Aaaaaand … I’m already late! Yikes. But I am right on Mexican time, so how’s that for you, colonizers who are early, Target! Starbucks. I’m talking to you. 😁 Note to self, have the first Hispanic Heritage Month post ready to post before August 15th.

Some of the big brand companies have had their collaborative products out since mid-august when the official start of the Hispanic Heritage month is September 15th.

I would be remiss if I did not address the pink “Hispanic” in the room. Meaning, not everyone in America considered “Hispanic” is actually Hispanic. It’s a term that has been widely used to lump anyone from the Latin Americas and countries where Spanish is the official language, together. Thats roughly 23 countries and 14 territories, lumped together for “Hispanic Heritage Month” to be represented in a quarter of a section in a store. It looks like it is the conglomerates PC way of being “all inclusive”. Pos, buena suerte with that one.

Hispanic Heritage Month

The above is for a whole other post though, coming soon!

Let’s get into the goodies!

BIG COMPANIES

Target

With their “Mas Que” campaign initiated in 2021, Target offers products that highlight Latin artists and Latin owned companies. “Mas Que (Spanish for “More Than”) marketing campaign meant to show that there is more to the Latino culture than meets the eye”.

I guess I can buy that. Literally.

@itsmelinavega Makes my heart so happy ❤️ Thank you @target for giving representation to my comunidad🫶🏽#masqueamonth #target #hispanicheritagemonth #masqueamonth2023 #targetfinds #targetstyle #millenialloteria #tragosgame ♬ Costa Oeste EZ Band – EZ Band

This year, you’ll find “Querer is Poder” on a few of the items.

Target has quite the selection when it comes to variety of products. Kitchen, clothes, games, books, Dia de los Muertos … It’s worth the look.

Starbucks

This year, Starbucks collaborated with Cuban and Salvadorian artist Manuela Guillen. In an article titled, “Uplifting new Starbucks merch collaboration honors Latin American culture”, you can learn about Manuela and her partnership with Starbucks. These special Hispanic Heritage Month cups and mugs are available now!

Following their annual tradition of participating in Hispanic Heritage month since 2020, this year, Kohl’s campaign is, ¡Asi Celebramos! Their website has 9 pages of merchandise ranging from clothing that highlights several “Hispanic” countries, kitchen goods, accessories, books, albums, and special T-Shirt collections with DC, Soccer, Pride, and Disney highlighting each country.

From September 1st to November 2nd, the Plaza de Familia in Disneyland comes alive with Mexican culture by way of Coco. There are so many special events that take place for you to enjoy during this time including live entertainment, crafts, special foods, interactive experiences, a new Coco collection, and plenty of photo opportunities.

This Coco experience is around long enough to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month and Dia de los Muertos.

Vans

Since 2017, Vans has created an annual Dia de los Muertos collection that drops sometime in August or September. Shirts, sweaters, socks, and of course shoes for this collection are available NOW.

@jramend New @Vans release for Día de Muertos 2023! Shirt, shoes and hoodie on their website! It was fast shipping as well! #Vans #diademuertos #diadelosmuertos #dayofthedead #xolo #xoloitzcuintle #mexican #mexico🇲🇽 #shoestyle ♬ La Llorona (feat. Los Macorinos) – Natalia Lafourcade

Schick

This year, Shick Intuition teamed up with Target and Afro Latina visual artist and author Reyna Noriega to create a limited edition Shick Intuition Sensitive Razor exclusive to Target. With vibrant colors and creative ways to display the diversity of our cultures, the limited-edition collaboration is sure to catch the eyes of many for a unique shave.

You can also find many of her canvas pieces on Target’s website as well. Check these paintings, rich with color and inclusion.

BOOKS TO READ

Here’s a list of 6 books from Latinx authors that I read and enjoyed. I’ll even throw in one reason why I enjoyed the book.

This gothic book singlehandedly brought me out of my over 10 year book slump and she is my favorite.

Captures so much real current generational trauma.

Historical, fantasy, and fiction, unite to tell the story of a sordid love triangle.

Hits so close to home for so many reasons.

Tells stories of our past and our future.

A Latina protagonist goes about her year in high school learning about the highs and lows of her youth and how the choices of others around her affect the woman she is becoming.

So, Hispanics, Latinx, Latinos, Latinas, Chicanx, Chicanos, Chicanas … I hope I covered everyone, because apparently this month is supposed to cover everyone who speaks Spanish and is from the Latin Americas.

I hope this article piqued your interest in annual products you can look forward to at some of the bigger stores, a new Latina owned company, or a new book to read. So many ways to support our people!
