This Doña LOVES food. Soy Mexicana, sooooooo, obvio (obviously).

A year into my journey of taking care of myself, I’m like half in on the healthier eating lifestyle. I fluctuate between eating super healthy, making better choices and smaller portions when it comes to eating out, and finding healthier options of the foods I love.

Being a comfort eater with depression, lots of inflammation in my body from endometriosis, and a creature of convenience, let’s be realistic, food can easily be a vice for me.

But you guys, I have found a good group of staple foods that can give you something to look forward to, some with health benefits, AND foods that won’t make you feel so guilty consuming!

Requirements:

  • Foods that are low in added sugar because sugar is the root of all evil, obvio.
  • Foods that use a better quality oil, like Avocado Oil, Expeller Pressed Oil, or Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
  • Avoid natural flavors because there ain’t nothin’ natural about them.

Pos (well) let’s get to it!

1. Tattooed Chef

This is one of my best frozen food discoveries.

I haven’t heard much about it mainstream yet, but it is absent of most harmful ingredients found in frozen food. This brand offers more of an array of ethnic style cuisines, but really has such a wide variety of foods for all times of the day, specializing more in bowled foods. Think Acai, burrito, and breakfast bowls. And I am here for all of them.

So, the next time you see yourself reaching for Jimmy Dean, Lean Cuisine, or Hot Pocket greens … just kidding, I felt a rhyme coming on 😉, try these instead! They’re so much better for you and they really pack in A LOT of flavor! *Pro Tip: I often add fresh items just for funzies.

2. Organic Salad Mix: Spinach, Arugula, Purple Cabage, & Iceberg Lettuce

On a YouTube rabbit hole search I did on foods that help with liver and inflammation, I recently discovered the benefits of arugula and cabbage. So like, why would I not include them in a salad? All that color and all those benefits, why the heck not?! Variety is the spice of life for me.

So try to spice up your salads with more than just ol’ reliable iceberg lettuce. And stick with organic! It REALLY does make a difference. Those pesticides out there, they’re not a joke guys. I saw this great movie that’s stuck with me for years. Check it out.

3. Spindrift Sparkling Water

As I sit here writing this, I am currently sippin’ on a … Nolito, Spindrift’s version of a lime and mint sparkling beverage … I know, I know I’m dead with the name! You guys get it right? Mojito …. Nolito … 😂 sigh, I digress.

If I’m being honest, it took me a minute to get used to sparkling waters. It’s just not my thing. But I love sodas, and that is one of the worst inflammation causing products you can put in your body.

Popular products like Hint, Mio, Perrier, Bubly, and Sparkling Ice all contain the dreaded natural flavors ya’ll. It speaks for itself.

I’ve still yet to try them all but here are a couple of my favorites.

4. Good and Gather Bars

These ones, I will literally go out of my way to get them from Target. Because, well that’s their brand. Now, not all of them are absent of natural flavors, but there’s such a variety you’ll be able to find a few. I’ve found a core 4 that I get all the time and they are a part of my morning routine. Also, I’m not a morning routine person, so this is a HUGE deal for me because I look forward to getting up in the morning to eat them.

Heads up, these are very much like the Rxbar … (whispers) but better. They don’t have that chewey consistency that jacks your teeth up. Have I mentioned I’m in the 40s club now? The last thing I want is for something that’s supposed to be healthy for me to send me to the dentist.

So skip all those other brands like Nature Valley, Fig, BelVita, Kind, even Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars and Good & Gather Organic and trade those for the Good and Gather Bars.

5. Applegate Meats

All you meat lovers, let me present to you, drum roll please … Applegate. This brand, mis amigos, is the “No. 1 brand in the natural and organic prepared-meats category“. This is like the best of the best when it comes to quality meat. Applegate is grassfed, non-gmo, without additives, and delicious.

They offer a variety of deli meats and frozen chicken options. And ohmygah, wait … they have a dairy line too?! I personally haven’t seen their cheese options in stores yet. I’m assuming you can find them in Whole Foods. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here are a few of my favs.

6. Siete

If you take anything away from this list, let it be this brand. Not only is it Latin founded and owned, the Siete line offers Mexican-American with a Texas flair, or what we Mexicans call, Tejano, foods. I’m talkin’ tortillas, chips, seasonings, vegan queso’s and refried bean dips. If you want to eat healthy and convenient Mexican food, they have it. And you no longer have to buy it at specialty health food stores. Wal-Mart carries Siete ya’ll. So no excuses.

Their story is pretty amazing. We all know that some of what makes Mexican foods so delicious are the … well, for lack of nicer words, “unhealthy” ingredients. I’m leaving the quotes on because, how dare you judge my people’s food. I said what I said … That being said, it’s the “unhealthy” ingredients that lead to a lot of illnesses my people suffer from. Including me. Which is the foundation of Siete. Their website is AMAZING. Check it out!

It was hard to pick just 3 favorites here, but here they are.

7. Pop & Bottle Coffee

So these are fairly new to me. I literally just discovered them as I was looking for a quick grab cold coffee option. Something that wasn’t an energy drink, or Starbucks. You know, something healthier. And until just recently, I hadn’t seen anything like this.

This coffee brand, is female owned and get this, each flavor has a little something extra in it like collagen or adaptogens. This is everything I was looking for and more! I’m still trying to get used to the taste but I’m so all in with these. You have to check them out for yourself.

8. Vital Farms Organic Pasture Raised Eggs

The first time I tried these eggs, I was sold. I’ve heard about how you can tell the difference between eggs by their yolk. And there is a real difference ya’ll. The yellow in the yolk is soooo much more vibrant and an almost orangy color in a non-gross kind of way. These eggs can be hard to come by but if I have the option between these eggs specifically and your run of the mill “cage free” eggs, it’s the Pasture Raised Organic Eggs all the way. These chickens are just happier. And so is my tummy!

So many healthier options to try!
